Early in my massage career, I learned that one of the difficulties facing male massage therapist is that the traditional Swedish type of massage, which usually uses oil or lotions, concerns some women, and men, from the standpoint of comfort and security. Also, some individuals, like myself, do not like the feel of oil on their skin or the fact that after this type of massage, you usually want to go and shower, which makes it difficult to receive this type of massage during the middle of the day or when you are trying to squeeze in a massage between dropping the kids off at soccer and picking them up to take them music lessons. Because of these reasons, I perform a style of massage that uses techniques from other methods of "dry" massage, which allows the massage to be done over clothing, providing a level of comfort, security, and convenience.
I can picture many of my clients all saying "yes" out loud as soon as they read the above sentence. Ha ha! Unfortunately, for most people who have never received a "deep" style of massage, the first session or two tends to be a little uncomfortable. Although the pressure can be adjusted to suit the clients tolerance, this pain is usually a result of the muscles and tissue being tight and restricted. Tight, resticted muscles do not allow waste materials to pass through those areas efficiently. As a result, those areas become backed up with waste and become tender when pressed. As muscles "loosen" with massage they tend to be less painful.
Depending on whether the injury is an acute injury or a chronic one determines whether one session or multiple sessions are needed. Generally, a mild sprain or strain might only require one or two treatments, while chronic injuries will take more time. Also, depending on your level of activity, more treatment or regular maintenance might be required. Many people who engage in strenuous physical activity don't consider the importance of rest and recover, and regular massage can be an extremely effective method of maintaining peak performance.
Rocktape was designed to be left on the skin for approximately 3 to 5 days. The adhesive was designed to help vent water and sweat away from under it which keeps the taped area ventilated. Also, by leaving the tape on, clients receive the benefits of the tape for days.
